Annual SPPA Firstie Brunch & SPPA 25th Anniversary – April 19, 2015

SUNDAY, APRIL 19, 2015

11:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Battleship New Jersey
62 Battleship Place
Camden, NJ 08103

SPPA will be celebrating the Class of 2015 “Firstie Brunch” aboard the Battleship New Jersey on Sunday, April 19th, 2015.

We are celebrating with a brunch under the tent on the fantail of the Battleship New Jersey on Sunday, April 19, 2015.
The brunch will be served from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM.

The Firstie Brunch program will begin while brunch is being served and will adjourn by 4:00 PM. A cash bar will be available as well as free parking on site.  In addtion, the Battleship New Jersey is handicap accessible.

The Firstie Dinner has traditionally been a dinner where we recognize our Firstie Parents, and all the sacrifices that they’ve made, along with their midshipmen, to achieve a transformation four years in the making.  However, this event is by no means limited to parents of the Class of 2015.  This event is open to all members of SPPA, as well as relatives, friends and family, the Alumni Association and prior graduates.  It’s a truly special event, highlighted by the reading of letters from the Firsties to their parents who will be in attendance that afternoon.  If you’ve never had the chance to attend this event, it is certainly an enjoyable celebration.  It’s one of those traditions at SPPA which is most memorable, where you’ll certainly laugh and maybe even shed a tear or two when the letters are read out loud to the audience.

In addition, in February 2015, SPPA will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary!  Therefore, we will also have a ceremony to celebrate this milestone, and hope to have many of our early membership come back and join us.

The cost of the tickets will be $50 per person, which includes the brunch buffet, attendance to the Firstie Recognition Ceremony and the 25th Anniversary celebration, and free parking.

Please RSVP by March 27, 2015.
Please send your check, made payable to SPPA – Firstie Dinner to the following:

Tom Nieberding – Treasurer
4633 Old Oak Road
Doylestown, PA  18902

We expect this will be a gathering we can talk about for years to come.  However, space is limited, so please don’t delay!

Tom Manion speaking engagement

“Col Manion’s writing is simple and powerful. He tells Travis and Brendan’s stories as a narrator of old, in the third person, and thus is able to make the boys seem alive as he relates them discussing their hopes and dreams and of Looney meeting the woman who would later become his wife. It?s this same visceral writing, however, that will make the reader’s heart ache when the Manions are told on a bright Sunday morning of their son’s death, and how it took Looney’s wife seeing his body in the casket to accept the reality of his death. The American public has been deliberately sheltered from war, and America needs to see its consequences in order to grasp its toll on the few military families.”

– Marine Corps Gazette, Book Review

“Brothers Forever is the story of two warrior brothers-in-arms who are bonded forever by their love of country, their shared need to serve, their selflessness, their courage, and war. This is the story of a deep and lasting friendship that lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved them. A deeply moving, true-to-life tale of two men, two brothers, two American heroes, who now rest with the angels, side-by-side at Arlington cemetery. God bless them both.”

– Gary Sinise, award-winning actor and founder of the veterans-supporting Gary Sinise Foundation

“For those who might question America’s character, this account of two remarkable young men will restore confidence. So long as our country breeds committed warriors like Travis Manion and Brendan Looney, we will pass down our freedoms intact to the next generation. Their story is the stuff of legends, yet for them it was very real.”

– General James Mattis, USMC (Ret.), former commander of US Central Command

Col. Tom Manion started his career in the Marine Corps – retiring after 30 years as a Colonel. Besides his military career, Tom joined Johnson & Johnson in 1990 and through the years has held various leadership roles building a reputation for delivering results. Tom is the father of 1stLt. Travis Manion. Travis was a Marine leader who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country in April 2007.

After the loss of Travis, the family established the Travis Manion Foundation to support our military, the families of the fallen and to help create the next generation of leaders. Through the foundation, Tom has worked within the community and around the country to galvanize people around him, inspiring them to convey a sense of sacrifice and public service in all they do. Tom’s late wife, founder and visionary of the Travis Manion Foundation, Janet Manion, passed away April 24, 2012, devoting every day to putting service above self.

November 12th – General Meeting Notice

Hello SPPA Parents:

On Wednesday, November 12, we will be holding our next General Meeting.  We are in the process of preparing our program for this General Meeting, which will be held at the First Troop Armory in Philadelphia.  The Armory is located at 23rd & Ranstead Streets in Philadelphia, is accessible by public transportation, within walking distance of the 30th Street train station and includes plenty of off-street parking.

We are trying to get a head count of how many parents plan to attend the meeting.

Do you have any questions you’d like to get answered about Commissioning Week?

  • What events are a must see?
  • How long should I stay in Annapolis?
  • Where should I stay, in a house or a hotel and why?
  • What specific details are available on the graduation ceremony itself?

Currently, we are looking at the following program:

6:30 – 7:00 Board Meeting (Board Members)

For the General Membership:
6:30 – 7:30 Reception
7:30 – 8:15 Presentation by parents of recent graduates, who will have plenty of first hand knowledge to share with the membership.
8:15 – 8:45 Question and Answer Session

If you are planning to attend, please RSVP to graystock@verizon.net by Sunday, November 9th.  Please bring along your favorite appetizer, snack or dessert for the Reception preceding the meeting.

When you reply, please put “November 12 Meeting Reply” in the subject of your email.

We hope to hear from you soon!
